“Underfunded” School Districts Prioritize Political Lobbying Over Music, Art and Athletics

In Liv Finne’s article for Washington Policy Center, she discusses the association of school districts across the state with the Washington State School Board Directors Association (WSSDA). According to her article, “Public school officials consistently say they don’t have enough funding, yet each year they give $3.5 million in public money to one of the largest political lobby operations in the state.”

The WSSDA’s political activity “often works against the educational interests of parents and students,” including labeling concerned parents that communicate with school boards as domestic terrorists, and pushing racist curriculum into our local school districts and classrooms.

With the upcoming February 8 election and many proposed school district levies under consideration in Skagit County, Ms. Finne’s final statement resonates.

“Local school boards tell us they are chronically underfunded and they regularly cut music, art, athletics and other popular programs.  The legislature should end the transfer of public money to WSSDA and instead direct $3.5 million a year to benefit music, the arts and athletics in Washington’s elementary schools.”
